This course is designed to provide classroom teachers, school administrators, IT specialists, library media specialists and school counselors with the knowledge and skills regarding cyber safety that are necessary to create awareness and provide education about digital citizenship to K-12 staff and students. The course will delve deeply into both the benefits and threats that we face online. In order to understand these threats, at times, participants will be visiting online sites that are explicit in nature. Therefore, some sites needed to complete assignments will not be accessible while on your school district’s network.
After completing the online modules, participants will be required to attend one day of face-to-face instruction. The face-to-face instruction will be designed for specific job roles (i.e. classroom teachers, school administrators, IT specialists, library media specialists and school counselors). Below are the module topics:
Risks and Misuses
The Social Web
Virtual Worlds and Gaming
Tools and Strategies
Cyber Safety Suggestions
For each module, participants will be required to view a webcast, complete a written assignment, and post to a discussion board. All required assignments must be approved by the course instructor(s) before credit is given for completion. The duration of the online portion of this course is approximately ten weeks. A new cohort date has not yet been set.. This course will be eligible for participants to earn 3 PLUs. Course completion information will be provided for participants to submit to their local professional development coordinators.
